Clubbersguide: How did you first get into DJing?

I left school to become a dj in 1992... it was a big risk that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone, but this is what I did… I had an opportunity to work in a club and as I wanted the night life to become ”my” life, in that time, it was an easy choice to make… then, naturally I began to practice with the records of the club and quite easily, I became one of the names of the “Paris underground” scene…

Clubbersguide: What do you think is more important for a DJ - the mixing technique or the track selection?

Dj nowadays is quite different than before… I began to play hard techno, and sometime I was mixing three vinyls together, and this is this technique of mixing who helped me to “build my name”... and I was proud of this… then, the “goa trance” arrived, and most of the djs were playing DAT tapes… I was not, or then, when I did, I had only one DAT machine to be able to mix this unreleased music (that was the goal of the DAT tapes...) with another record… and then I was really one of the first djs who bought in japan a CD player, and I remember that in the beginning, many people believed I was wrong, that CD will not succeed, it is not the same… etc… but in the end… you saw what happened… So now it is different… it is muuuuch more easy to mix with CD players, and almost everyone who practice can do it… so the selection is very important… anyway, whatever happens, if I have to choose between a Dj who put killer music but who don't mix it so much, and a killer technical mixer who put shit music, I go for the first one ;) but the goal is to have both of them… last little detail… in trance, compared to many other styles of electronic music, you can not really mix two tracks together from the beginning to the end playing with them, because trance is build to be complete as a track… and it is full of sounds... i consider that more than 1.30 minutes of mix for “full-on trance” is too much… most of the times…

Clubbersguide: What would be more important for you while performing on a party - the number of the people that have come or the atmosphere that is created?

Mmmm… the eternal question between nice private parties and big festivals… well... i like both… it is different feelings in each of them… of course, 35000 people in Brazil is hard to forget… but 500 people on a boat, or in the jungle, or in the desert is hard to forget too !!! For an artist, it is true that to play in front of a LOT of people is a great feeling…and to be honest, I am more afraid to play for little committees while I am quite confident when it is a big party… but I can not choose which are my favorites… As a DJ, I prefer little ones… as a live act, I prefer big ones…

Clubbersguide: What's been the best party you've DJed at? Whats the strangest thing that has happened to you at a gig? What was your best, and your worst party experience?

I can not choose exactly a BEST party ever... i am djing for 16 years, and I have a looot of memories of parties I‘ve played at… I can maybe choose my favorite of each country, or for each year… for example last year, I think my favorite party was a big XXXperience in Brazil… a lot of beautiful people, nice nature, super good weather…
About the strangest thing… well... it is also hard to say... there is a lot of “different” kind of “strange things”… what I love, and it is not so strange and it happens a lot, is to meet in some countries some people that I know from somewhere else. This is always cool…
My best experience ? pffff… I told you... I have sooo many… I don’t have “one” in particular… my best experience is always to meet new people here and there, and to become friend with them little by little, more and more every year… and to be able to have people I can consider as “friends” all around the world…
And about the worst experience… same story… I have so many I could write a book about Dj’s life !! ahaha… and still, nobody would believe everything… I will stay “soft” for this answer and just speak about a party in Brazil where the police came to arrest me on stage because I was playing in a party that they wanted to close… 4000 people minimum were shouting “talamasca” (this was the good part...) and began to throw cans and bottles on the policemen that were around me… which meant I was in the middle… fortunately, i was lucky and didn't receive any… but nothing happened to me as I was just working there… it was still scary… but not the worst :-)

Clubbersguide: Does your set differ if you're playing for 50,000 people as opposed to say - 2000? What's your preference - playing at festivals or clubs?

My Dj set can change of course depending on who played before me and what they played… as a dj I can adapt my music to the party… but I mostly play live act, or if not, I am most of the time asked to play my own music… so it is true that most of the time, as long as people react good, I have my preferences in my selection of tracks… and when i play live act, well… it doesn't change so much… i just played my newest tracks unreleased, together with my favorites of my last album…

Clubbersguide: The new technology has made its path creating new kinds of DJ equipment. What do you think about using CDJs, laptops or decks? How would you describe the strengths and weaknesses of each?

Listen… this one is easy… forget about all this… the JOB of the Dj is to make the people happy, and to make them dance… it doesn’t matter about the “HOW” he does… from my point of view…

Clubbersguide: Being a producer as well as a DJ, how much does one influence another, are your productions more influenced by your sets and the tracks you play or is it vice versa?

I am a little bit “prisoner” of my own style… I play in my dj sets the tracks that will fit with my music, or my style… and I will make music that can fit in my live… it is a circle… but as long as I am personally happy with the music I am making, I don’t see any reason to change…
Now, artistically, I am very interested in making other kind of electronic… I feel able to make very very hard music, as I feel able to make very commercial one, melodic, slower..etc… and I am very interested to try… but this would be under another name… because talamasca is and will stay talamasca… and anyway, for now, I don’t have so much time left to begin another project… maybe in few months…

Clubbersguide: How do you describe the music that you're bringing out right now and where do you look for inspiration?

Almost everything I did in 2008 was inspired by the new style of trance… I just now finished a collaboration album with XSI, a new French band that I produced at mind control records, and the goal was to get some new ideas, new way of thinking the music… ok, we did an album, I am very happy with it, I am very proud of it, it will be released in april of this year… but I think that for the year 2009, which means from now, I will get inspired more and more by the old music… maybe come back to more “goa melodies”, more mystical sounds and music… to the old school spirit of the music but with the sound quality of nowadays… we’ll see :-)
To describe my music… I don’t think that the word “trance” is still appropriate to this music… the word “psychedelic” is even worth for me… i consider my music as “dancefloor music”, or “full-on electronic”…

Clubbersguide: Which was the first track you ever made?

The first Talamasca ever was made in 1995, it was called ”tribal journey” and was released on Krembo records in Israel… but I was not alone when I made it...the Five first tracks of talamasca were made by three people. Then, I continued alone... and my first track alone was called telepathic atmosphere… I used Bulgarian voices in this track and it became a hit… in that time…

Clubbersguide: When you're making music, what kind of equipment are you using?

My studio is not a very very huge one... i think I have the quality instead of the quantity… I use a TOFT audio ATB as a mixer, with a universal audio converter, then, as synths, I have a Virus TI and a nordlead (from the beginning…) and the Eventide H8000 for almost all my effects… I have also a powercore and a UAD1 as hardware plug ins, and of course, I use a looooooot of vst plugins and vst instruments… I use also a pair of BM6 Dynaudio speakers, and I work on Cubase 5.

Clubbersguide: What piece of kit you cannot live without?

You mean in my studio? If I have to keep one thing? The eventide… for sure…

Clubbersguide: What do you find more chalenging - recording your own tracks, or remixing tracks from other producers?

To remix tracks is DEFINITELY more easy, and faster to make than an original track.

Clubbersguide: Why did you choose to give your music away for free?

Because IT WAS FOR FREE already….it was everywhere on bittorrent, emule, or other peer to peer sites…
So I decided that if there is one person who can decide to give my music for free, it would be me !!!
Beside this… there are a lot of countries where my cds are hard to find… or expensive… and I wanted the people of those countries to be able to listen my music also… my goal is not to sell cds… well, as a label I need to sell cd to keep my company, but my goal as an artist is not to sell cd... it is to have the maximum of people who enjoy my music ! in this position, this was the best move to do…

Clubbersguide: Do you think it helps with the promotion and are you planning to give some of your future releases for free also?

It depends... if I have a new name to promote, as a label, yes, I think that it is good… but as Talamasca, I think it is useless… people know what kind of music it is… unless there is a big change in the style, which is very very unlikely, it is now useless to give everything for free... i did it once because I wanted to be the first, but you understand that I can not do it every time… but I am still planning to give some free tracks to the people who will have the real cd… I am thinking about a way to do it… because I want everybody to listen to my music… but I must give something more to the people who buy it… fair enough…

Clubbersguide: What do you think about music sharing over the internet? Does that globally ruin the music industry ?

YES, YES, and YES it is totally ruining the industry and labels are suffering… BUT… i already downloaded some movies to watch them… i already downloaded some games for my kid… I did download Cubase before to buy it… so who am I to say to people to not download tracks… if it is free somewhere, why not ? I just ask people, once they have downloaded and listen to the cd, if they like it, to please go and buy it, first of all because the quality of a cd is better than a mp3, and we spend most of the time in the studio, not to compose melodies, but to work on the “sound quality”… and also because a CD is an object… it is not a “data file” in the computer… and last thing, the CD market is the only thing that can still make the difference between the artists that people love and the artist that people don’t… promoters of parties are looking on the sells of each cds… if tomorrow astrix, Gms or myself we don’t sell more than any “new name on a new label”, then, how promoters will choose who people want ?

Clubbersguide: What can we expect from you in the future?

To not change my style…and my behavior… :-D

Clubbersguide: What do you do to relax? Any hobbies besides music?

Eheheh… well… those who know me well know that I am for many years into magic… not paranormal magic but illusions, cards, manipulations… and for some years now, I am a lot into hypnosis and I regularly hypnotize people here and there before or after the parties….
Beside this, I have a family… a wife and two kids, and nothing is greater than to be able to be with them… my life is divided into 4 parts… My family, making music, go to play the music, and making hypnosis and magic…

Clubbersguide: If you could pick any career besides a DJ/Producer what would it be?

I wanted to be an actor when I was kid… this is cool job too… ahaha… but I guess it is a bit late for now… so if I was not a dj… i think I would be… of course, magician or hypnotist…

Clubbersguide: Anything else you would like to add?

SLEEP !.... :-D
